Had to send a quick note to thank you for my vintage fabric order that arrived this morning it must have been processed immediately - as I got my goodies in no time at all! The Sponsored Walk

Hazel, Ash and the Little Emperor recently took part in a charity walk to raise funds for the local school PFTA. In short it was freezing, windy, muddy and The Little Emperor had to be carried for most of the 3 mile(which felt like 10!) trek around the village farm fields of Harston, South Cambridgeshire.

Rain that fell that week and logged on the field froze so hard you could have skated on it!

The sun did come out to play but we didn't feel any of the rays because of the icy breeze coming from Norway.

After the walk back at school HQ, we supped hot chocolate and feasted on scalding soup and delicious jacket potatoes, cakes and treats. Yummy! Hopefully lots of money will be collected by the walkers to be used for funding for the school.

Sorry once again for our lateness in posting recently. We have been so busy in the shop with our New Year sale that the blog has become rather neglected, but fear not! We are back!

We have just been to the Birmingham trade show looking for new goodies and ideas. We found a good new supplier of vintage style goods, who we are hoping to deal with in the future.

On Sunday 6th December,Anne and Colin attended the ever more popular Vintage Vogue Fashion Fair in Brentwood, Essex. The fair is fast becoming the most fashionable place to be seen outside London, especially with celebrities joining the masses and seeking out a bargain or two! The day was a great success and we hope to return with our wares for the next fair in the new year. You can take a better look at all the information and see all the dates for 2010 here.

On Friday 27th November, we took part in a fabulous Ladies Only Spa and Shop event to help raise money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

We held a stall along with several other ladies who were selling jewellery, handbags, make up and other lovely girly products. There were also ladies giving hand massages and advising on colour therapy. Also on hand were 2 wonderful men dishing out hand made canapes and delicious mini desserts! All the various stalls and organisations donated gifts for goody bags and raffle prizes for the 50 women who attended the party. It really was a great night with over £1000 being raised. Our heartfelt thanks go to Sophie Brown, the amazing woman who organised the whole thing, for inviting us to take part and help in our own small way to make the evening such a success!

Hello everyone! Sorry for not posting for so long, The Vintage Fabric Market has been a hive of busy bee-ness since November. Here are just a few of the many, many, many photos taken on Halloween of Hazel and The Little Emperor. They had a fantastic time at a party and then went trick or treating! It was great fun and lots of sweeties were collected for consumption over the following days!!

Halloween Pumpkin Cake

Halloween pumpkin cake

Ingredients

300g self-raising flour
300g light muscovado sugar
3 tsp mixed spice
2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
175g sultanas
½ tsp salt
4 eggs , beaten
200g butter , melted
zest 1 orange
1 tbsp orange juice
500g (peeled weight) pumpkinsor butternut squash flesh, grated

200g pack soft cheese
85g butter , softened
100g icing sugar , sifted
zest 1 orange and juice of half
Cuts into 15 generous portions
Preparation and cooking times
Prep 20 mins
Cook 30 mins
(without frosting)
1. Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Butter and line a 30 x 20cm baking or small roasting tin with baking parchment. Put the flour, sugar, spice, bicarbonate of soda, sultanas and salt into a large bowl and stir to combine. Beat the eggs into the melted butter, stir in the orange zest and juice, then mix with the dry ingredients till combined. Stir in the pumpkin. Pour the batter into the tin and bake for 30 mins, or until golden and springy to the touch.
2. To make the frosting, beat together the cheese, butter, icing sugar, orange zest and 1 tsp of the juice till smooth and creamy, then set aside in the fridge. When the cake is done, cool for 5 mins then turn it onto a cooling rack. Prick it all over with a skewer and drizzle with the rest of the orange juice while still warm. Leave to cool completely.
3. If you like, trim the edges of the cake. Give the frosting a quick beat to loosen, then, using a palette knife, spread over the top of the cake in peaks and swirls. If you're making the cake ahead, keep it in the fridge then take out as many pieces as you want 30 mins or so before serving. Will keep, covered, for up to 3 days in the fridge.
Try this
Pumpkins can vary dramatically in water content, so keep an eye on the cake towards the end of cooking - yours may take less or more time to cook through. If you're not carving out a pumpkin this year butternut squash works brilliantly, too.

Cambridge Cancer Help Centre - The David Rayner Building

Hazel was lucky enough to spend an afternoon yesterday, helping out at a bit of a do, for the Cambridge Cancer help Centre. She was invited to help dispense drinks from the bar for the opening of the David Rayner Building which has been 18 months in the making. It was officially opened by none other than the Duchess of Gloucester.

Everyone who helped to make the project a success, whether donating time, money or materials attended and even those who attend the centre currently. Everyone was so proud of what has been achieved in such a short space of time and incredibly awed by the work of the centre itself, which continues to provide support for those suffering from cancer and other terminal illnesses.

Anyone who has suffered through such a terrible illness as cancer, or their families and loved ones, can appreciate what a great need there is for centres such as this. If only more people could have the vision and courage to go ahead with these kinds of projects. Those which bring together the whole community, as is the case here, then perhaps we would not be without hope in the face of such struggles.

The Holiday Album

Our heartfelt apologies for being away for so long! We have been on holiday to Newquay, in beautiful Cornwall. Hazel, Ashley, Anne, Colin and The Little Emperor have had a wonderful rest. We stayed in a caravan park called Summer Lodge. Cornwall is a delightful little corner of England with gorgeous beaches, good surf and friendly people. We visited many great attractions during our stay. Including Boscastle, of which it's harbour can be seen below. Much of it was destroyed during a flash flood in 2004 but has now been rebuilt thanks to the hard work of the villagers and many volunteers.

We also visited Bodmin General Station, which boasts a full size working steam train. Of course in true Vintage Fabric Market style we were too fashionably late, and missed it.

We also visited Charlestown Shipwreck and Heritage Centre. A very interesting museum of all kinds of nautical and maritime history and artefacts. It is built on the docks where China Clay was imported and exported below the museum. There are still the original tunnels you can go down to see where the workers used to push the carts through which The Little Emperor refused to go in and threw an impromptu hissy fit. He was eventually lured in with hands over his eyes with the promise of cornish Clotted Cream Fudge at the other end!

This beach below is Watergate Bay which is absolutely stunning! There is a small stream on one side which runs from the top of the beach to the sea. Many, many kids have dammed it up over the warmer months to make a constantly filling pool for them to splash in without having to even enter the sea. Perfect for parents who don't want the worry of jellyfish, crabs, currents, rip tides etc!

We shall certainly be returning to Cornwall again next year, it's so beautiful! Hopefully in our new project, The homemade Vintage Fabric Market Camper Van!!!

A few weeks ago, Hazel and The Little Emperor went to see Ashley(Daddy) playing cricket for The Queen's Head in Newton. The team were playing their annual grudge match against rival pub, The Blue Ball, from Grantchester.

Not really caring about cricket, I'm afraid Hazel cannot tell you the score, nor even who won the match. She can say however, there was alot of ale consumed by the players, and also some fabulous homemade scones.

Vintage Vogue Fashion Fair

On Sunday June 7th, Gillian, Anne and Hazel made the trip to Brentwood, for the Vintage Vogue Fashion Fair. The whole day was a huge success. It was great to meet so many kindred spirits who are so devoted to individuality of vintagefashion. There were people from all walks of life rummaging through the treasures on offer from the wide variety of different stallholders.

The sound stage put on a great show with lots of music and a live performer who was excellent! As you can see above, people got the chance to dance while they shopped!

It was a great day out and we look forward to the October and December fairs!

The Secret Garden

On Tuesday, Anne , Hazel and Gillian visited Burwash Manor Barns in Barton, Cambridge. They had a nosy around the lovely little shops there which are full of all the precious things you don't need but really want!!

One such shop is The Secret Garden, where their friend Claire works, who was also the fantastic photographer at Hazel's wedding. In fact if you're into weddings then you should also check out The Secret Garden Marquee, also at Burwash. Great for all your celebration needs!!!

The Little Emperor's Chocolate Cake

On Saturday, The Little Emperor turned 3, so Hazel baked him a cake. It was heavenly! Here is the recipe she used for all the little bakers out there!

FOR THE CAKE
Ingredients
250g (9 oz) plain flour
400g (14 oz) mixture of golden caster sugar and dark brown sugar
75g (3 oz) cocoa powder
1 dessertspoon bicarbonate of soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
225ml (8 fl oz) cold filter coffee
225ml (8 fl oz) condensed milk
100ml (4 fl oz) clarified butter

Preparation method
Preheat oven to 180 C / Gas mark 4. Grease and flour a 23x33cm (9x13 in) baking tin.
In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa, bicarb, baking powder and salt. Make a well in the centre and pour in the eggs, coffee, milk and butter. Mix until smooth, batter will be thin. Pour into prepared tin.
Bake in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until a cocktail stick inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. Allow to cool in the tin before slicing and serving.

FOR THE ICING
Lots of dark chocolate, melted
Lots of butter, softened
Equal measures of icing sugar and caster sugar
Condensed milk to smooth it all out
Couple of teaspoons of vanilla bean paste
Loads of Golden Syrup

Mix it all up till you get to a toothpaste kind of consistency and away you go!

Grantchester Fair

Today, Anne, Colin, Hazel and Roman took a day trip to Grantchester Fair.We walked by the river, where cows were happily grazing.

We saw some tractors.

We saw some sheeps being sheared.

And a tiny little steam engine.

There was a falconry display.

A traditional Punch & Judy show.

We also saw a medieval sword fighting reenactment.

Then we came across a second world war army truck display.

Which showed us typical items a soldier would have used in that time.

Then we walked back past the river and went home.

It's been a long day!

The Vintage Fabric Market is going on tour! You'll be able to find us at the Vintage Vogue Retro Fashion fair, held by Atomic Events in Brentwood, Essex. Pin Up Glamour!

Hazel has found some great pin up pictures, some of them dating right back to 1938 by the artist Billy Devorss. This is vintage glamour in full force, high heels, lipstick and fur stoles abound. Heaven!!

Favourite Things!

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens, brown paper packages tied up with strings, these are a few of my favorite things.

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels, door bells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles. Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings. these are a few of my favorite things.

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes, snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes, silver white winters that melt into springs, these are a few of my favorite things.

This haircomb was made using lovely blue feathers and vintage 1950's costume jewellery embellishments .

We recently took a trip to a local garden centre, and a fun time was had by all. We picked up lots of baby plants for the Vintage Fabric Market Gardens as well as some vegetables for planting. We are on our way to self - sustainability! There is nothing like home grown vegetables to keep you healthy, and of course they taste better too!

We did a good deal of browsing and made she we covered every inch of the place to make sure we hadn't missed a single thing. Here are a few pictures of what we saw and loved.

Today has been a glorious day. Full of sunshine, fun and laughter, and enjoyed by all the family. It is Mother's Day and we found that spring has most definitely sprung! The trees are in blossom, the sun has come out and all the little creatures have come out to play. For example:

One of her favourites is Dear Daisy Cottage which is filled with scrumptious photos and a heartfelt commentary.

She also found Junk Camp which has great step by step instructions to make lovely stuff.

Situated next to Clare Castle Country Park, it spans 4 floors of unique antique, retro and vintage collectables.

Anne and Colin's Countryside Outing

Anne and Colin scoured the Cambridgeshire countryside yesterday in search of more beautiful vintage items. Anne was delighted to find a very rare cute original 1950s hairslide which reminded her of her childhood, and inspired her to make a lovely cosmetic bag in 1950's fabric.

Anne also found a delightful vintage postcard which she especially wanted to share with you all.

Gillian has been busy in preparation gathering the materials she needs to make one of her "button bouquets", which will no doubt be featured on the blog very soon!

Today has been another busy day in the workshop. Anne and Colin have been hard at work updating the website by adding hair accessories and vintage sewing patterns. Lots more lace and vintage fabric will be added for sale to the website soon. The requests for mens knitting patterns have already been seen to, with Hazel adding lots more at the weekend. Meanwhile Gill has been sourcing new vintage items which we hope will add the charm of the website!! If you have any requests for the website, don't hesitate to contact us.
